History

Sam's Town Point is what Austin was like about 20 years ago.  Beer signs, dart boards, wooden paneling with tvs mounted in the corners set the tone in this friendly neighborhood bar.   Built from the ground up,  opened and operated by the Grossman family since 1987.  Located right in the middle of a residential neighborhood.  This hidden treasure is one of Austin's best kept secrets.  Sam's Town Point has earned the right to be known as the friendliest little bar in Texas.

The parking lot is in Austin and the bar is 25 feet into Travis County.   Smoking is permitted (not encouraged) with plenty of ashtrays.    You may notice that with the live music playing the  regulars and musicians mix with the young and old.    Everyone tends to greet the newcomers.     Dart boards, pool tables, dominoes, washer pits, gazebo, BBQ pit area,  juke box,  as well some other video games are available.

Beer and wine are served as well sodas, juices, and some non-alcoholic beer.  Patrons may bring their liquor of choice and buy set-ups.  We also offer food menus from our kitchen.   The philly cheese steak sandwiches are great.

Dedicated in loving memory to Sammy Grossman, who this place was named after.  He once lived and dreamed here.

The family moved to Austin in 1979.  Sam's Town Point opened in September of 1987.  It was built on four and a half acres deep in the heart of south Austin.  Originally Sam's Town Point was a private club aimed at providing a safe family environment.  For 14 years it ran as a private club with memberships for families running at just $12.00 a year.

The Thursday night dart leagues have been a mainstay at Sam's Town Point since the day it opened.  They play with nylon tip darts.  Some players are good, some are bad, but everyone has a great time.

The bar shifted directions a few years ago with the change of the beer and wine license and adding more live music.  Bringing in live bands and especially Musicians Open Mic night have made Sam's what it is today.

Sam's Town Point has had its share of mishaps through the years.  One of our esteemed regular's redecorating of the front of the bar with her car was too close for comfort.  Her pedal got stuck and she crashed into the front of the bar.  No one was hurt and Penny Grossman, the matriarch of the Grossman household, got a new room out of the deal.  Penny wanted to be closer to the action, so Wally built her a family room right at the front of the bar.
